Script – “Todo bichig,” translated as “Clear Script” from Kalmyk, used before the Russification period began. This simple yet visually poetic script moves top to bottom and tells a timeless story of love—an old poem written by a soldier to his beloved.

This collection tells the story of the Kalmyk people and their traumatic history of exile, ethnic cleansing, and forced labor during the Soviet era. In 1943, under Stalin’s regime, over 93,000 Kalmyks were deported to Siberia. Branded as “traitors” and “cannibals,” they endured brutal conditions, displacement, and the loss of their homeland.
